Records of the White House Office of the Chief of Staff to the President (George H. W. Bush Administration)

This series contains correspondence between the White House and individual Cabinet agencies.

This series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence handled by both the Office of the Chief of Staff and by the Correspondence Office on behalf of Chief of Staff John Sununu. In some cases correspondence is marked as "M.I." (More Important, or appropriate for the White House Office of Records Management Subject File). There is also a small amount of unanswered public mail in these files.

This series contains lists of discussion items for the Chief of Staff (with copious annotations from John Sununu) and an assortment of background material for the discussion items. The amount of background material varies widely from week to week. There are several weeks of discussion items missing from this series.

Bush Administration including: the transition from the Ronald Reagan Administration, abortion, fetal tissue research, AIDS, the Exxon Valdez oil spill; international trade (especially international textiles); the savings and loans industry; the steel Voluntary Restraint Agreement (VRA) program; the Clean Air Act, the White House Conference on Global Climate Change; the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); the automobile industry; the Brazil Environmental Conference; civil rights; relations with China following the student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989; immigration policy for Chinese students studying in the United States after the 1989 demonstrations; Most Favored Nation status for the People's Republic of China; the credit crunch; planning for the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum; the National Drug Control Strategy; the 1990 Houston Economic Summit; the London Economic Summit; the Uruguay Round of economic negotiations; the 1990 Education Summit; the 1990 Bipartisan Budget Agreement; oil drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf; wetlands conservation; the spotted owl issue; turtle excluder devices; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); proposed Presidential Fast Track authority; Financial Interest and Syndication Rules (FIN/SYN); global warming; the National Energy Strategy; the Persian Gulf War; and the nomination of Supreme Court Justices David Souter and Clarence Thomas. There is also correspondence from many members of Congress and several conservative organizations, including the National Right to Life Committee and the Heritage Foundation.

This series contains Chief of Staff John Sununu's daily schedules for both office activities and travel from 1989 through the end of 1991.

This series contains schedules, letters, memoranda, requests, reports, newspaper articles, resolutions, and copies of letters written by President George H. W. Bush. There are also letters from Congressmen and Senators relating to various subjects.

This series contains senior level staff correspondence from every office in the White House Office, most offices of the Executive Office of the President, and every member of the Cabinet. The content of the materials varies widely. Reports and background information on major issues are included in this series.
