This series contains documents relating to selected trips taken by President George H. W. Bush. The files include notices to the press, press pool assignments, press schedules, press releases, presidential trip schedules, and travel announcements.

This series contains travel vouchers, White House travel authorizations, press releases, press briefings, transcripts of press conferences, pool reports, schedules, manifests, and other materials documenting events of presidential trips as well as other activities and concerns for the White House for each day of the trip. The files also include logistical guidance provided by the Office of the Press Secretary to members of the press corps accompanying the President.

Other subjects covered at considerable length in the records include the Soviet Union's confrontation with the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), the question of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, the use of Latin American countries to help the U.S. in the war on drugs, the need to make headway in cutting the deficit, and Bush's environmental policy.

Fitzwater's briefings covered general announcements (upcoming meetings, schedule, trips) before proceeding to domestic and foreign issues of interest for that day. Typically, briefings to the press progressed in a question-and-answer format.

Other briefings given by government departments or agencies usually addressed a specific event (such as a head-of-state visit) or issue that directly involved the department giving the briefing. Occasionally, such briefings were called "background briefings." On such occasions, members of the press were forbidden from naming the briefing official in their stories and were only allowed to refer to that person as "a senior administration official." These briefings also progressed in a question-and-answer format.

This series contains copies of the information distributed to members of the press by the staff of the Office of the Press Secretary. Frequently, these materials consist of press releases containing transcripts of presidential speeches and remarks, announcements of presidential actions (such as nominations, executive orders and bill signings), fact sheets, proclamation texts, statements by the press secretary, press pool reports, schedules, and transcripts of press briefings. This series also contains an index to press releases, press briefings, proclamations, presidential remarks, and statements by the press secretary.

This series consists entirely of one-page memoranda listing the participants, date, time duration, location, attire, and media coverage for approved presidential activities.

This series contains fact sheets on upcoming trips and events. The sheets provide in-depth details about the population, area, industry, education, and history of the cities, states, and countries to be visited by the president. The fact sheets also cover details on any businesses or events to be visited by the president, and they also include political profiles of each state.

This series consists of a weekly packet of political cartoons assembled under the masthead "Friday Follies." Generally, the "Friday Follies" consist of cartoons that parody individuals in state and federal government and discuss other highly publicized leaders and controversial issues in the U.S. and abroad. These political cartoons are of an editorial nature intended to raise public consciousness of serious issues and are presented in a funny, somber, witty, or sometimes sarcastic manner. An occasional news summary may be found among the assembled photocopies.

Issues covered include government spending and the deficit, the conflict between recognition of Israel and Palestinian independence, the nuclear arms ban, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), U.S./Soviet relations, the Reverend Jim Bakker, embassy sex scandals, the savings and loan (S&L) crisis, Jack Kemp and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) mismanagement, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Chinese democracy, ethics, the war on drugs, the Paris Economic Summit, abortion, and funding of the Nicaraguan Contras.

The political cartoons were taken from newspapers and journals, including the "Chicago Tribune," the "Cincinnati Inquirer," the "Atlanta Journal-Constitution," the "Baltimore Sun," the "Boston Globe," the "Washington Post," the "Miami Herald," and the "Los Angeles Times," among others.

This series contains transcripts of interviews and question-and-answer sessions given by President George H. W. Bush, Mrs. Barbara Bush, Chief of Staff John Sununu, and several other White House officials. The transcripts cover a wide range of topics including domestic issues, foreign policy, the president's programs, and the Bush family and friends. It also has some transcripts of interviews given by foreign officials such as Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze of the Soviet Union/Russia and King Hussein of Jordan. In addition, there are transcripts of round table discussions by Asian, Spanish, and Jewish groups.

This series contains copies of newspaper and journal articles and editorials; electronic news media printouts (from sources such as Scripps Howard News Service, Reuters, and the Associated Press); "Foreign Media Reaction" reports by the U.S. Information Agency; and a collection of news updates. These were printed by the Office of the Press Secretary under the masthead "The White House News Summary." Each news summary is subdivided into five categories: Trip News, International News, National News, Network News, and Foreign Media. Sources for the summaries and excerpted articles include the "Washington Post," the "New York Times," "USA Today," the "Los Angeles Times," the "Wall Street Journal," "Copley," the "Chicago Tribune," the "Dallas Morning News," the "Boston Globe," "United Press International (UPI)," and "Reuters," to name a few. Information was also gathered from the ABC, NBC, and CBS television networks.

The series also includes press releases, including statements by the president, and press briefings distributed by the Office of the Press Secretary. Additionally, there are transcripts included in the series of interviews and panel discussions conducted by various network television correspondents. An occasional "Friday Follies" is also included among the records.

This series consists of reports by various reporters who accompanied President George H. W. Bush and his staff on all domestic and foreign trips and events. The reports include information on the mood and atmosphere as well as the food served at particular events. The reports also mention the weather conditions.

Although not an exhaustive listing, the series does document many of the major foreign sojourns of the chief executive and provides an account of most of the appearances he made in the final months of the 1992 campaign. Included in the records are background briefings, press releases, pool reports, schedules, manifests, transcripts of interviews and press conferences, speeches, travel vouchers, and trip compilations with fact sheets and other relevant data.

The Trip Schedules contain trip itineraries for President Bush. A selective recounting of the years 1989-1990, these records have schedules for a number of the overseas trips covered in the Trip Files. Included in the records are brief notices to the press that usually describe changes in the travel arrangements of the president.
