Records of the White House Office of Press Secretary (George H. W. Bush Administration)

This series consists of transcripts of briefings given to the press by White House or agency officials. Most of the transcripts are of briefings given by Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater. Fitzwater's briefings covered general announcements (upcoming meetings, schedule, trips) before proceeding to domestic and foreign issues of interest for that day. Typically, briefings to the press progressed in a question-and-answer format.

Other briefings given by government departments or agencies usually addressed a specific event (such as a head-of-state visit) or issue that directly involved the department giving the briefing. Occasionally, such briefings were called "background briefings." On such occasions, members of the press were forbidden from naming the briefing official in their stories and were only allowed to refer to that person as "a senior administration official." These briefings also progressed in a question-and-answer format.
