This collection consists of 58 series of subject files based on 58 broad subject classifications developed by the Office of Records Management during the Kennedy Administration to facilitate the filing and retrieval of White House records. These records pertain to the functions and operations of the White House, Federal Government, foreign and other governments. These records also contain correspondence from private companies or individuals.

This series contains materials relating to medals and awards given by the President and presented to the President such as the Frankel Humanities Award, Kennedy Center Honors, Daily Points of Light, Medal of Honor, End Hunger Award, Faculty Fellows Award, Historic Preservation Awards, Environmental and Conservation Challenge, Theodore Roosevelt Environmental Awards, Legislator of the Year Award; civilian awards the President issues by law, Executive Order, or personal initiative: Presidential Medal of Freedom, Citizens Medal, National Medal of Science, Environmental Education Awards for Teachers, Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching; special awards established by the President, created by the President on an individual basis, awards used to grant Presidential recognition to individuals or organizations: Special Awards for Exceptional Service, Presidential Public Safety Communication Award, Presidential Commendation for Exceptional Humanitarian Service, Presidential Citations, Certificates of Appreciation, requests for awards and citations; requests for Presidential signatures, i.e. Gallaudet University diplomas; proposals for awards - William J. Casey Chair in Geopolitical Activities, and proposed recommendations - 1991 National Medal of Technology.
