This series contains materials related to education in general. The category contains letters, memoranda, educational plans and strategies, reports, and veto threats relating to education and literacy issues. A substantial amount of the material relates to the Education Summit, the development and refinement of the President’s National Education Goals; the America 2000 Plan, and the issue of parental choice and vouchers in education. Senior Advisors’ Veto Threats in the form of letters to Congressional committee chairs include detailed information about the reasons why the administration opposed certain legislation. Additional items in the category concern the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, including letters to and from Barbara Bush about literacy. Much of the interoffice correspondence was generated by Roger B. Porter and Charles E. M. Kolb, two of the President’s senior advisors on domestic policy. The President’s successive Secretaries of Education, Lauro F. Cavazos and Lamar Alexander, are also well-represented through memoranda, correspondence, and reports which document their efforts to shape and influence the President’s education policy as well as public debate on education issues.
