One of the most talked about events of the Cold War was the downing of the American U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers Sr. over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960. After being shot down Powers was captured by the KGB, subjected to a televised trial, and imprisoned - all of which created an international incident.Join us now for an exciting evening with author Francis Gary Powers Jr. as he explores the harrowing tale of his father's experience in the Cold War.

Born June 5, 1965, in Burbank, California, he is the son of Francis Gary and Claudia SuePowers. Gary holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from California State University, LosAngeles, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration / Certification in Non-profit Managementfrom George Mason University (GMU), Fairfax, Virginia.He will graduate this year with hisMasters Degree in U.S. History from Adams State University, Alamosa, CO.

Gary is the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Cold War Museum, a 501(c) (3) charitylocated at Vint Hill, VA 45 minutes west of Washington, DC. He founded the museum in 1996 tohonor Cold War veterans, preserve Cold War history, and educate future generations about this timeperiod.Recently, he consulted for a StevenSpielberg Cold War thriller, Bridge of Spies, about James Donovan who brokered the 1962 spyexchange between KGB spy Rudolph Abel and CIA U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, Sr.

After the program there will be a reception and book signing. We will have several items for sale! We'll have the following books by Mr. Powers: "Operation Overflight," "Spy Pilot," "Strangers on a Bridge," and "Letters from a Soviet Prison." We'll also have a hollow Ike Dollar Coin (you can hide your secret messages inside!) and some Francis Gary Powers autographed items.
