A portion of the records in this request are security classified and have been closed under the restrictions of the Freedom of Information Act. The White House Office of Record Management (WHORM) Subject Files contain correspondence, memoranda, printed material, and a report. Correspondence consists of letters from the general public and routine White House staff response letters concerning the peace process in Angola and Namibia. Memoranda contain standard White House staff member memos to the President and other staff members on such issues as suggested presidential messages, draft responses to public mail, transmittal of the Presidential report to Congress, and request for Mrs. Bush to meet with the wives of newly- appointed ambassadors. Also included are memos in regards to presidential determinations to be published in the Federal Register concerning issues related to Angola and Namibia, as well as a memorandum of justification for each of the presidential determinations. Printed material includes the written interview of President Bush with Polish journalists. The report consists of the presidential report to Congress on the implementation of the Angola-Namibia Accord. The Bush Presidential Staff and Office Files include correspondence, memoranda, press releases, and printed material maintained by individual staff members and offices. The correspondence contains congressional and public letters with routine replies from the White House concerning such topics as US policy toward Angola and the observer delegation to Namibian constitutional election. Memoranda include appointment memoranda, travel requests and notification of foreign travel, suggested draft responses and talking points for incoming correspondence, and notice of the American journalist arrested in Namibia. Press releases include presidential determinations on Angola and Namibia and the presidential delegation to observe the constitutional assembly election in Namibia. Printed material includes news articles on the Angolan election, a press alert from the American Press International on the API editor arrest in Namibia, and a report entitled "United Nations Council for Namibia: Violating the Impartiality Package" from the International Freedom Council. The Bush Vice Presidential Files materials consist of letters from the public regarding issues such as opposition to US involvement in Angola and Namibia, concern over Admiral Murphy's public relations firm representing Angola, and appreciation of Bush being the guest speaker of honor at the awards banquet for Dr. Jonas Savimbi. Also included are routine response letters with a standard reply from the Vice President. The press release contains the statement by Vice President George Bush on Dr. Jonas Savimbi's visit to Washington, D.C. Also included are routine inter-staff memos regarding meeting schedules, lists of participants, and approved Vice Presidential activity. Printed material includes news articles on topics relating to Angola. The Quayle Vice Presidential Staff and Office Files contain letters from the public expressing opinions and concern in regards to US policy toward Angola, a standard thank you letter from the White House Gift Unit, and an unclassified telegram expressing a standard condolence message from Marilyn Quayle on the death of a Namibian court official. Correspondence also includes a Department of State letter encouraging state and local governments to follow federal example in lifting sanctions on Namibia following its independence, as well as a letter from Namibian Ambassador in acknowledgement of the passage of DC Act 9-211 removing sanctions and a routine White House staff response letter with a copy of the Act. Memoranda consist of standard inter-staff memos regarding draft messages, attached letters, requests for appointments, and approved Vice Presidential activity.
