Records on Selected Materials on Somalia: Humanitarian Relief Effort

The materials in FOIA 2005-1659-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. 2005-1659-F 1 2005-1659-F 2 FOIA 2005-1659-F contains materials from the National Security Council, specifically regarding Deputies Committee Meetings, and includes very basic and unclassified documents related to the humanitarian effort in Somalia during early fall of 1992. This material partially documents the efforts of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and worldwide non-governmental organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (CRC) and Save the Children. During the Bush administration, Rear Admiral Jonathan Howe represented the White House at the Deputies Committee Meetings regarding this effort in Somalia. The researcher should note that these files are limited to two very specific points in time and do not provide a comprehensive view of the crisis in Somalia or of the United States' response.
