His ministerial posts include Minister of Education (1969- 1973), Minister of Housing (1973-1976), Deputy Prime Minister (1982-1986), and Prime Minister (1986- 1991). His service as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Swedish Social Democratic Party was the result of the assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme. However, during his tenure as Head of State, Carlsson welcomed improved relations with the United States by accepting an invitation from President Reagan for an official visit to the White House. The trip to Washington took place in September, 1987, with a formal dinner at the White House on September 9 and a Reception at the Swedish Embassy on September 10.
