This series contains government forms, letters and memos, statements, a declassified memcon, a paper, and a publication related to Czechoslovakia. The letters in this collection include unclassified communications between President Bush and President Vaclav Havel regarding the close relations between the U.S. and the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, a state visit, head of state gifts, and his resignation as President of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. There are letters and memos between President Bush and congressmen about most-favored-nation status, the state visit by President Havel, restitution of illegally seized property by the communist regime, a position to finish public service in Czechoslovakia, and inclusion of Czech and Slovak federal government officials as observers to Paris arms control talks. Other correspondence between President Bush, congressmen, administration officials, and private citizens addressed multiple topics such as the future of Czechoslovakia and U.S. policy, U.S. and Czech ambassadors, police brutality and oppression of citizens, democratic movements, printing equipment request, offers to assist with economic development, training tour for political parties, presidential proclamation and transmittal letter to Congress concerning the extension of nondiscriminatory tariff treatment, cheese quota, exclusion of Czech-Americans regarding the restitution of illegally seized property by the communist regime. Lastly, there are memos among staff members regarding the appointment of Rita Klimova as ambassador to the United States as well as gifts exchanged between President and Mrs. Bush and President and Mrs. Havel. Other memos discuss President Bush's meeting with President Havel. The statements are comprised of President Bush's public remarks made during President and Mrs. Havel's state visit. The declassified memorandum of conversation between Presidents Bush and Havel covers several topics including the Middle East peace conference, continuation of Czechoslovakia as a federal state, economic reform, NATO endorsement, trade, and the future of the Soviet Union. The paper is a presidential proclamation concerning the extension of nondiscriminatory tariff treatment to Czechoslovakia.
