FOIA 2011-0282-F includes selected records from the chronological files of David Gompert, Senior Director for European and Soviet Affairs for the National Security Council. These files date from October 1990 through January 1993. The documents consist of correspondence, reports, press releases and 2011-0282-F 2 speeches. Internal correspondence relates to administrative matters, such as travel and meeting arrangements, press guidance, and farewell letters from President Bush and Brent Scowcroft for departing NSC staff members. External correspondence includes letters from Congressman offering opinions and advice on topics such as the situation in the former Yugoslavia, letters to President Bush from foreign Heads of State offering support for the Gulf War, and a letter from Barbara Bush to Mrs. Gorbachev regarding AmeriCares. Also included are transcripts of President Bush meetings and telephone conversations with various world leaders. Enclosed reports include biographic information from the NSC on David Gompert and other NSC staff members, a report from the Helsinki Commission on a US Congressional Delegation visit to the Baltic States, a report from Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy on US Diplomacy toward the Former Soviet Union, and a proposal from a private organization for the 1990 CSCE Summit. The enclosed press releases contain an announcement of David Gompert's appointment as the Senior Director for European and Soviet Affairs, fact sheets on US assistance to Russia and on the Housing Guaranty Program for Central and Eastern Europe, and a press statement on the Franco-German Corps. Also included are speeches and remarks by President Bush and Brent Scowcroft regarding the US role in Europe, US-Soviet Relations, Yugoslavia, New World Order, and other topics of interest. It should be noted that many of the documents listed here have been closed for National Security classification and/or other exemptions of the Freedom of Information Act. Read less
