These files date from July 1990 through November 1991. The documents consist of correspondence, reports, press releases and speeches. 2011-0296-F 2 Internal National Security Council correspondence relates to administrative matters, such as travel and meeting arrangements. External correspondence includes letters from Congressman and from U.S. citizens. The Congressional correspondence offers opinions and advice to the president on topics such as assistance to the USSR, the situation in the Baltics, Soviet-Israeli relations, anti-Semitism in the USSR, post-coup policy towards the Soviet Union, US-Greek relations, and diplomatic relations with the Former Soviet Republics. Letters to the president from U.S. citizens address human rights concerns in Turkey and the USSR, the Chernobyl explosions, the situation in Cyprus, the USSR blockade of the Baltics, and recognition of Former Soviet Republics. Also included are memoranda of conversations with European heads of state discussing issues such as sanctions against Iraq, relations with the USSR, NATO, the Gulf crisis, Soviet reforms, and recognition of the Baltics. Reports include bimonthly updates from the administration to Congress and from the United Nations on the Cyprus dispute, a presidential report to Congress on the administration's actions to support Baltic Independence, a report from the Peace Corps regarding establishing volunteers in the USSR, a report by a CSCE delegation to the Baltic States, and reports by U.S citizens on Soviet-American economic relations and on relations with Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus. The enclosed press releases contain fact sheets on U.S. aid the Soviet Union, trade agreements and space cooperation with the Soviet Union, press statements after meetings with various Heads of State, and proclamations for initiatives such as Irish-American Heritage Month and Baltic Freedom Day. Also included are speeches and remarks by President Bush, Vice President Quayle, and Mrs. Quayle regarding US-Soviet Relations, US-Turkish relations, the Gulf War, and other topics of interest. It should be noted that many of the documents listed here have been closed for National Security classification and/or other exemptions of the Freedom of Information Act. Read less
