The materials in FOIA 2004-1701-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA 2004-1701-F contains records from the Office of the Vice President's National Security Affairs Office relating to Vice President Quayle's 1991 trip to Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines; the Vice President and Mrs. Quayle's visit to India to attend Rajiv Gandhi's funeral; and meetings with Indonesian officials. The Staff and Office Files consist of correspondence, press statements and guidance, memoranda, photographs, and administrative forms. Correspondence includes messages expressing congratulations and/or condolences between Indonesian officials and Vice President Quayle, as well as letters from constituents expressing views on such matters as doing business in Indonesia, Japanese trade barriers, and human rights in Indonesia, specifically the situation in East Timor. In addition, the Vice President sent letters thanking Indonesian officials for gifts. Also, there is correspondence regarding the Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference in Singapore. The Japanese segment of the trip is highlighted by photographs of Vice President Quayle and Prime Minister Kaifu. Moreover, various memoranda and fact sheets concern issues involved with business opportunities in Japan. Additionally, there are cables containing administrative details of the trip, local press reaction to the visit, and transcripts of the Vice President's public statements. Furthermore, there is prepared text of public statements to be given by Vice President Quayle, and questions-and-answers prepared for the Vice President's press availabilities. The collection is rounded out by routine transmittal memoranda, cover sheets, and "Vice President's Register" forms acknowledging gifts from Indonesian officials. Read less
