On May 7, 1984, President Reagan appointed him Assistant 2000-1291-F 2 Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. Chase Untermeyer resigned this position in April 1988 to head the Bush presidential transition. When President Bush took office in 1989, Untermeyer came to the White House as Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Personnel. As Director of Presidential Personnel, Untermeyer and his office were responsible for approximately 4,000 presidential appointments throughout the Bush administration. During his tenure in the White House, Untermeyer became chairman of the White House Task Force on Puerto Rico. In 1991, Bush appointed him Director of the Voice of America.
