The National Prayer Breakfast was initiated informally by the United States Senate during World War II. President Eisenhower formally established the annual event in 1953. In more recent times, dignitaries from throughout the 1999-0311-F 2 world have been invited to attend. Material includes correspondence, planning documents and schedules. Also included are items from public officials from the local, national and state levels of government. Material reviewed included Bush Presidential and Vice Presidential records and Quayle Vice Presidential Records. Another group of material concerned planning a tribute in celebration of Ronald Reagan's 75th birthday, which coincided with the 1986 National Prayer Breakfast event. These included copies of notes of congratulations to President Reagan from numerous world leaders. Many of these letters were excerpted for then-Vice President Bush to use in his prepared speech.
