Selected records on U.S.-Somalia relations

The materials in FOIA 2005-0999-F are responsive to the topic of the FOIA. This finding aid includes materials originally processed for FOIA 2005-1000-F "Bush Vice President Records on Somalia" and FOIA 2005-1001-F "Quayle Vice President Records on Somalia." Other related materials can be found in FOIAs 1998-0101-F and 2005-1659-F. FOIA 2005-0999-F (including FOIA 2005-1000-F and FOIA 2005-1001-F) contains materials regarding the diplomatic relationship between the United States and Somalia. The Bush Presidential materials focus primarily on discussions of the growing humanitarian crisis and how best to address that situation 2005-0999-F 2 through the United Nations and an international coalition within the context of the existing internal conflict within Somalia. The Quayle Vice Presidential materials consist of only two folders from the National Security Affairs Office that contain documents from the various meetings that the Vice President's Assistant, Karl Jackson, attended on Somalia plus Quayle's meeting with Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Ali Samantar in 1989. Similarly, Bush's Vice Presidential materials consist of documents from Bush's Assistant for National Security Affairs, Donald Gregg. Gregg's folders contain correspondence from various citizens, former acquaintances, and the U.S. Ambassador to Somalia. Also included are the various meetings that were either scheduled for or held by the Vice President with U.S. or Somali government officials. Much of the material responsive to this FOIA is contained in the files of the National Security Council (NSC) and, for the Vice President, the National Security Affairs Office.
