The materials in FOIA 2009-0705-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. 2009-0705-F 2 FOIA 2009-0705-F contains materials related to the visit of a delegation of Kenyan government ministers to the 1990 National Prayer Breakfast. They were in Washington, DC from January 29 to February 2. Material responsive to this FOIA is contained in the files of the National Security Council (NSC). Although these files are listed, it should be noted that portions of these documents are security classified and have been closed under the restrictions of the Presidential Records Act and the Freedom of Information Act. The George Bush Presidential Subject Files contain primarily routine government forms which log correspondence and summarize actions taken on the correspondence sent to the White House. Also included are lists of participants in a meeting between Presidents Bush and Moi of Kenya. There is a letter from President Bush to some friends thanking them for a note and newspaper from Nairobi. In addition, there is a preservation copy of the Nairobi newspaper which contains articles about the United States' relations with Kenya. The Staff and Office Files, which are maintained by individual staff members and offices, also contain routine government documents plus several pieces of correspondence, a list, a copy of a legislative bill, newspaper clippings, and cables. The bulk of the correspondence and the list are related to President Bush's meeting with several foreign leaders prior to the 1990 National Prayer Breakfast. This group of dignitaries included President Daniel T. arap Moi of Kenya. Also present are memos and letters addressing Senate Joint Resolution 234 which outlined Congress' belief that the Kenyan government suppressed the democratic election process and suspended economic and military assistance for its nation. This includes letters of transmittal of replies from the Kenyan government to US governmental officials in addition to a copy of SJR 234 and related newspaper clippings. The remaining correspondence covers varied topics including the nomination of Smith Hempstone as U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, a thank you letter from President Moi to President Bush expressing his appreciation for the 1990 meeting, and a letter from President Bush to President Moi thanking him for allowing the Peace Corps to be a presence in Kenya for the past 25 years. The cables are between Presidents Bush and Moi regarding a Fourth of July message and request for a meeting during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Read less
