Following World War II, several Pacific island nations (including the CNMI) liberated from Japanese occupation by Allied forces were administered by the United States under the auspices of the United Nations' Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI). In 1976, both nations entered into a closer political relationship through the negotiated Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in Political Union with the United States which was fully implemented on November 3, 1986. Each nation designates special representatives of their respective interests under the Covenant. The United Nations ended the TTPI as it concerned the CNMI on December 22, 1990. Read less
