The materials in FOIA 1999-0728-F are a selective, not necessarily all inclusive, body of documents responsive to the topic of the FOIA. Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. FOIA 1999-0728-F contains material related to an October 17, 1989 earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale that occurred along the San Andreas Fault in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. The 1999-0728-F 1 quake, known as the Loma Prieta Earthquake, caused extensive damage in San Jose, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco including collapsed buildings and roadways. The following day, President Bush declared portions of California a major disaster area. This FOIA includes letter, memoranda, and situation reports documenting many aspects of White House reaction to the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Letters are from the general public seeking assistance with disaster related matters and from Federal Emergency Management Agency officials regarding the ongoing relief efforts. Of particular importance are Situation Reports describing relief activities and noting the effects of the disaster on various localities in California. Read less
