(President Bush was the first incumbent President ever to visit The Netherlands.) Poland and Hungary were in the midst of dramatic change as the initial countries to begin the transition away from the Soviet sphere of influence and communism toward pluralistic democracies. The President's visit was intended to demonstrate continued U.S. support for those nations - as well as Eastern Europe as a whole - through improved diplomatic relations and economic assistance and exchange programs.
