Researchers should consult the archivist about related materials. 2004-0839-F 2 FOIA 2004-0839-F contains materials related to President George Bush's trip to Poland and Hungary en route to the Paris Economic Summit in July 1989 and The Netherlands immediately thereafter. (President Bush was the first incumbent President ever to visit The Netherlands.) Poland and Hungary were in the midst of dramatic change as the initial countries to begin the transition away from the Soviet sphere of influence and communism toward pluralistic democracies. The President's visit was intended to demonstrate continued U.S. support for those nations - as well as Eastern Europe as a whole - through improved diplomatic relations and economic assistance and exchange programs. In addition to several ceremonial events, President Bush participated in meetings with several Polish, Hungarian, and Dutch leaders, including Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. Read less
