During his professional career, Samuel Alito has served in the following capacities: law clerk with the law firm of Warren, Goldberg, & Berman, 1976; law clerk for the Honorable 2005-1617-F 1 Leonard I. Garth, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, 1976 - 1977; Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey, 1977 - 1981; Assistant to the Solicitor General, Department of Justice, 1981 - 1985; Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel, Department of Justice, 1985 - 1987; and U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, 1987 - 1990. He was nominated for U.S. Circuit Judge for the Third Circuit on February 20, 1990, confirmed by the Senate on April 27, 1990, and received his commission on April 30. White House Office of Records Management (WHORM) Subject File categories contain primarily correspondence tracking sheets, letters, and memos; most of which concern Alito's nomination to the Third Circuit and resignation as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey.
